May 27, 2016: Department of Fish and Wildlife Advises Fishermen to Help Prevent Whale Entanglements

(08:04) CALIFORNIA – State officials are asking California fishermen to take steps to prevent whale entanglements. The Department of Fish and Wildlife issued a letter this week, advising anglers to adhere to a number of recommendations, including removing fishing gear in areas where whale pods are present and minimizing the use of trailer buoys. The guidelines were partly contributed by the Dungeness Crab Fishing Gear Working Group. The group plans to meet again this summer to develop more recommendations aiming to reduce whale entanglements. (S.G.)
