May 22, 2016: SC Biotech to Halt Animal Research

(14:25) SANTA CRUZ-A Santa Cruz biotech firm has been fined 3.5 million dollars for violating the Animal Welfare Act. On Thursday, Santa Cruz Biotechnologies Incorporated entered an agreement with the USDA to pay the highest ever issued fine, to close its animal research facilities, and to desist from any further violations of the AWA. The company, which supplies antibodies to research laboratories worldwide, is alleged to have violated the Animal Welfare Act, in several allegations in 2012 and 2015, over its treatment of goats and rabbits at company facilities. Under the terms of the agreement the company neither admits nor denies AWA violations.
