April 21, 2016: Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency Fined for Sewage Spill

(06:36) PACIFIC GROVE – The Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency has been fined for their role in a raw sewage spill last spring. In May 2014, over 200,000 gallons of wastewater spilled at the control agency’s Fountain Avenue Pump Station during routine maintenance. In response, workers decided to release the wastewater through a pipe that led to the bay. The sewage spilled into the bay for nearly 7 hours, leading to the temporary closure of Lovers Point Beach in Pacific Grove. The control agency has since reached a settlement with the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board, and has been ordered to pay a $300,000 fine. (S.G.)
