(17:55) SANTA CRUZ – A number of Santa Cruz county residents have been targeted by computer scammers. The scam typically begins with a window popping up on a computer screen. The message says the computer is infected with a virus and that the user can call a specific number to get the virus removed. Once on the phone the scammer asks for access to the so-called infected computer….and (for several hundred dollars) infects it with a virus that collects information for identity theft uses. Anyone who has been scammed this way is encouraged to call the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office….or the Federal Trade Commission.
