(UPDATE) January 28, 2016: Both BASE Jumpers in Big Sur Incident Identified

(Updated at 06:13) – The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has now identified both individuals who are presumed dead after a BASE jumping incident in Big Sur. On Sunday, Mary Katherine Connell jumped off Bixby Bridge and landed safely below, before being swept away by large waves. Footage captured from a helmet camera shows a second male BASE jumper, Rami Kajala, parachuting off the bridge to rescue Connell. Search efforts for Connell and Kajala have been suspended. The investigation is ongoing.

(Posted January 26 at 06:38) – The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has identified one of the two people who died after BASE jumping off Bixby Bridge near Big Sur over the weekend. Officials say Ventura resident Mary Katherine Connell jumped off the bridge and landed at the mouth of Bixby Creek, before being swept away by large waves. Footage captured from a helmet camera shows a second male BASE jumper parachuting off the bridge to rescue Connell. He is still missing and is presumed dead. The investigation is ongoing. (S.G.)

(Posted January 24 at 18:18) BIG SUR – The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed one of the two people who BASE jumped from the Bixby Bridge is dead. At this time, the fate of the second jumper is unknown. The Sheriff’s Office is planning to release more information, including possible video footage of the incident, at a press conference Monday.
