November 19, 2015: Sea Lion Treatment

(18:42) MOSS LANDING- Researchers at the Marine Mammal Center have began testing a treatment for Domoic acid poisoning in sea lions. The toxic effects of Domoic acid are seen every year in small numbers of the sea lion population, however this year longer and larger algae blooms have produced more of the toxin causing record numbers of sea lions to be treated at the center. Specialists are using a compound that prevents the toxin from binding to tissue in the brain. Warmer ocean temperatures are said to be responsible for increased toxic blooms.
