August 19, 2015: Trial Date Slated for Suspects involved in UCSC Hate Crime

(17:15) SANTA CRUZ – A trial date was set for the two men allegedly involved in a hate crime at UCSC in February. On Wednesday morning, 22-year-old Jesse Robles and 23-year-old Wayne Beaton were ordered back in court for trial on March 28. They face 15 years in prison if convicted on charges of felony assault and battery with enhancements of a hate crime and causing great bodily injury. The alleged hate crime occurred on Feb. 7, when Robles and Beaton attended a party at Kresge College and spoke with a gay man who remarked upon Robles’ lip piercing. Robles and Beaton allegedly made homophobic comments towards the man and then attacked him along with three others.
