June 2, 2015: State Health Officials Advise Against Monterey Bay Seafood

(08:46) MONTEREY BAY – State health officials are advising consumers to avoid eating seafood sourced from the Monterey Bay. The California Department of Public Health warns that high levels of the neurotoxin domoic acid have been found in recreationally harvested mussels, clams and crabs as well as sardines and anchovies. Domoic acid is produced by naturally occurring algal blooms. Researchers say the outbreak is the largest they’ve seen in 15 years. The advisory does not apply to commercially harvested fish and shellfish. (S.G.)
