May 28, 2015: Caltrans Completes First Phase of Bay Bridge Investigation

(08:48) OAKLAND – Caltrans officials have announced the completion of the first phase of the Bay Bridge tower anchor rod investigation. In 2013, the agency found there were rods in the bridge’s foundation soaking in water and set out to verify their resilience. For the past several weeks, crews have been conducting pull testing to see if the structure can withstand major earthquakes. Results revealed that 99 percent of the rods were not broken. The two rods that did not pass the test will be analyzed. The next phase of the investigation will seek to determine the resiliency of bolts exposed to long-term corrosion in a laboratory. (S.G.)
