Construction has begun to transform a historic building on the UC Santa Cruz campus. The Cowell Ranch Hay Barn near Ranch View Road was built in the late 1800s to store hay and shelter oxen. Over the years, the building became structurally unsound and was fenced off. A new $5 million project will turn the barn into the new headquarters for the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems. A majority of the funds has been donated by the Helen and Will Webster Foundation. The barn is expected to open in the fall.
