UPDATE: Protest On Highway 17 – 03/03/15 15:00 S.S.

6 people have been arrested in connection with today’s protest on Southbound Highway 17. Just before 9:30 this morning, they drove a U-haul truck onto southbound Highway 17 between the Highway 1 overpass and Ocean Street, and unloaded various items. They then formed a line across the highway that was made up of protestors, concrete-filled trash cans, wire, rebar and chains.  Around 2 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers using jackhammers, saws, sledgehammers, and crowbars disconnected the protestors from the debris and arrested them. Lori Nixon, Ethan Pezzow, Janine Caceres, Sasha Petterson, Alexander Pearce and Sophia Di Matteo were booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.  Each of the 6 face a felony charge of planning a conspiracy, as well as misdemeanor charges of public nuisance, failing to obey an officer, and attempting to prevent an officer from performing a duty.   Protests began yesterday on the U-C-S-C Campus, and more are planned for the next couple days.

Protestors says they are protesting tuition hikes, racism, and police violence.
