California Considers Plan to Charge Per Mile Driven- 1/26/15 9:00 S.G.

California officials are considering a plan to replace the state’s gas tax with a fee for each mile driven. As demand and prices for gasoline fall, less tax revenue is being generated for road maintenance. The recent trend has led lawmakers to consider a plan to charge per mile driven to compensate for the $59 billion backlog. A 15-member study panel for the California Road Charge Pilot Program is currently looking into the possibility of replacing the gas tax. The committee had its first meeting on Friday in Sacramento.
