Salinas City Officials Take Legal Action to Stop Tax Increase- 12/18/14 8:30 S.G.

Salinas city officials are taking legal action to prevent a special election that would raise the sales tax. In November, Measure G passed, raising the tax to 1.5 percent. An organization has collected more than 13,000 signatures to hold a special election in March to raise the tax to 2.5 percent. The proposed increase would funnel even more funds towards public safety. Officials say the legal limit on sales tax is 2 percent, prompting the city to take steps against the proposal.
