An oil company is filing a claim against San Benito County following the passing of an anti-fracking initiative. Earlier this month, voters approved Measure J, which prohibits high-intensity oil extraction county-wide. The company Citadel Exploration is now seeking $1.2 billion, the estimated value of the oil they planned to extract from fields near Bitterwater. Before the election, county officials passed an ordinance that would allow the company to request an exemption from Measure J. County supervisors will meet in December to address the claim. Citadel Exploration will likely sue the county if the claim is rejected.
