The Santa Cruz City Council voted yesterday to increase downtown parking rates. The rate hike is expected to help the city eliminate $1.6 million in debt. The decision will implement changes including converting all meters on Pacific Avenue and side streets for one block to a rate of $1 per hour and increasing and standardizing all parking permit rates downtown to $35. The city also plans on installing paid parking by Pearl Alley and near Elm and Cedar Streets.
