HIGH SCHOOL PILOT PROJECT - 08/27/14 21:01 S.S.

SOME STUDENTS AT 2 CENTRAL COAST HIGH SCHOOLS ARE PARTICIPATING IN A NEW PILOT PROJECT THAT IS DESIGNED TO HELP THEM GET BETTER-THAN-ENTRY-LEVEL POSITIONS AFTER THEY GRADUATE. STAFF FROM THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, THE STATE BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRADES COUNCIL, AS WELL AS SOME CONSTRUCTION UNIONS WORKED TOGETHER TO CREATE THE MULTI-CRAFT CORE CURRICULUM (KNOWN AS MC3). THE IDEA IS THAT IT WILL HELP STUDENTS EARN PRE-APPRENTICESHIPS IN THE CONSTRUCTION TRADES. SALINAS AND SOQUEL HIGH SCHOOLS ARE AMONG THE 9 SCHOOLS (IN CALIFORNIA) THAT HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO USE THE NEW PROGRAM. SOME OF THE CLASSES INCLUDED IN MC3 ARE:
BUILDING TRADES MATH, LABOR HISTORY, AND TRAINING TO RECOGNIZE AND PREVENT HAZARDS ON CONSTRUCTION SITES. THE TEACHERS INVOLVED IN THE MC3 PILOT PROGRAM RECEIVED SPECIAL TRAINING.
