SALINAS CHIEF WANTS CRIME ANALYST 3-3-14 1845 OG

THE SALINAS CITY COUNCIL WILL HEAR FIREARM VIOLENCE ANALYSIS FROM POLICE CHIEF KELLY MCMILLIN TODAY AT 4PM (TUES).      APPROXIMATELY 90 PERCENT OF ALL HOMICIDES IN THE CITY ARE GANG-RELATED,   COMMITTED BY POINT FIVE PERCENT OF THE CITY’S POPULATION,   WITH 6 OF THE 23 ACTIVE GANGS RESPONSIBLE FOR TWO-THIRDS OF THE VIOLENCE FROM 2010 TO 2013.     AS PART OF HIS REPORT, MCMILLIN WILL ASK THE CITY COUNCIL TO APPROVE THE HIRE OF A FULL-TIME CRIME ANALYST.     (THE CITY CURRENTLY HAS A PART-TIME ANALYST.)     ACCORDING TO MCMILLIN, THE ANALYST AND UNNAMED “DEDICATED ADDITIONAL DEPARTMENT RESOURCES” ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF A MULTI-LEVEL VIOLENCE REDUCTION STRATEGY.      THE SALINAS POLICE DEPARTMENT CURRENTLY KEEPS SCORECARDS OF THE CURRENT VIOLENT GROUPS, AREAS IN WHICH THE VIOLENCE MOST COMMONLY OCCURS, AND EVEN THE HOURS OF THE DAY SHOOTINGS ARE MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR.
