Beginning this month, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office will limit immigration holds, by no longer helping federal officials conduct immigration sweeps. Requests for immigration holds will still be honored for those convicted of serious and violent felonies, and for registered sex and arson offenders. Deputies, who will no longer be able to take part in “ICE” roundups of residents, will still be able to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on request during emergencies, officer-safety situations and criminal investigations.
