Monterey County STD Warning 01-08-14 12:30 av

Monterey County residents are being warned about a spike in sexually transmitted diseases.   The Monterey County Health Department released the public warning today after an annual report on STDs was  issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The report showed a 123 percent increase in reported gonorrhea cases, and a 56-percent rise in reported infectious syphilis cases among Monterey County residents.    Health officials recommend increased awareness and testing for sexually active men and women, and say using a latex condom is the most effective way to reduce STD transmission.
