Pfeiffer Fire Update (Thurs) 12-19-13 09:30 av

Firefighters in Big Sur continue to battle a blaze that has been burning since Sunday night.  As of this morning the Pfeiffer Fire has burned 917 acres and is 79% contained.  Forest Service officials expect the wildfire to be 100% contained by tomorrow.  They suspect the blaze was caused by an illegal campfire on Buzzards Roost Trail.   So far, 22 structures have been destroyed including 14 homes on Pfeiffer Ridge Road.  Sycamore, River Inn and Pfeiffer Roads along with Andrew Molera State Park are still closed, while a mandatory evacuation order is still in place for Pfeiffer Ridge residents.  Meanwhile, a voluntary evacuation notice is still in effect for the area west of Highway 1 from Fernwood Resort to River Inn.   A shelter for displaced victims has been set up by the American Red Cross at Fernwood Resort.   To contact the Red Cross’s 24-hour hotline call 831-320-9989.
