The Pfeiffer Fire burning in Big Sur, is now 20% contained. New numbers were released during a news conference held today at 4 p.m. The fire has burned 769 acres and has destroyed 22 homes. Officials say roughly 200 homes along the mountains and canyons between Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean are still being threatened. An evacuation watch was issued this afternoon for the area west of Highway 1 between Fernwood Resort and the River Inn. Firefighters say they expect to have the blaze fully contained by Friday night. The fire broke out Sunday night on a hiking trail called Buzzards Roost Trail, and investigators suspect it could have been caused by an illegal campfire. Over 100 residents living on Sycamore Canyon Road and Pfeiffer Ridge Road were evacuated under mandatory orders.
A service center was opened this morning for displaced residents at Fernwood Resort Big Sur, where the American Red Cross is also on scene providing food, support and information to the victims. Anyone needing assistance can call the Red Cross’s 24 hour hotline at 831-320-9989.

The SPCA is also on scene rescuing animals from the fire, call them at 831-373-2631 if you need help evacuating your pets.
Meanwhile a smoke advisory is in effect for the Monterey Peninsula due to the fire. Officials say the blaze has created an unhealthy air quality for those who suffer from respiratory ailments. The health advisory is in effect indefinitely and officials warn that smoke conditions will vary depending on the wind direction and weather.
