Monterey County’s budget committee gave the official green light this week for a long-awaited jail expansion project.   As part of the deal, the County plans to pay 8.9-million dollars as part of it’s required 10% match, with the rest coming from the state.    The expansion plan will provide over 570 beds, more inmate classes and other programs, and is also expected to allow for anticipated growth over the next 20-years.   The jail is designed to hold 825 inmates, but usually holds 1100 or more.
