The owner of the Brookdale Lodge will spend a year behind bars for insurance fraud and failing to maintain worker’s compensation insurance. 52-year old Sanjiv Kakkar was sentenced to 364 days in jail and three years probation after the California Department of Insurance discovered unreported employee payroll totaling an insurance premium loss of $52,000, and under-reported worker’s compensation policy premiums. The investigation started 4-years ago after an employee reported a work injury and was not compensated for his medical bills. Kakkar also pled guilty to violations of the health and safety code and was sentenced to and paid a $10,000 fine for asbestos violations.
