DISCOVERY OF A LIFETIME – 10/16/13 09:50 S.S.

THE  DISCOVERY  OF  A  LIFETIME  WAS  MADE  OFF  SOUTHERN  CALIFORNIA  SUNDAY.     THAT’S  WHEN  A  MARINE  SCIENCE  INSTRUCTOR,  SAW  AND  COLLECTED AN  18-FOOT-LONG  OARFISH  (OFF  OF  SANTA CATALINA  ISLAND).     THE  SILVERYSERPENT-LIKESEA  CREATURE  WAS  DEAD  WHEN  IT  WAS  FOUND.    THE  LAST  OARFISH  SPOTTED  WAS  ABOUT  3  FEET  LONG.     BECAUSE  THEY  CAN  DIVE  MORE  THAN  3  THOUSAND  FEET  DOWN, THEY  ARE  SELDOM  SEEN.

Oarfish, which can grow to more than 50 feet, are a deep-water pelagic fish.
