Former Fort Ord Prescribed Burn/Day 2 10-15-13 10:30 av

A prescribed burn got under way this morning near Seaside, the second controlled burn on the former Fort Ord this week.   The fire started at 9:30 a.m. and is expected to burn roughly 341-acres.    Today’s burn comes after the former military base conducted a four hour burn yesterday on 327-acres.   Officials say the burn helps to clear vegetation so that workers can safely remove unexploded munitions and explosives from the area.   Warnings have been issued to those with health problems to close windows during the burn and to remain indoors and limit physical activity.    Today’s burn is expected to take a few hours.   South Boundary Road and Rancho Saucito have been closed during burn operations.

This burn has reportedly jumped its containment line. As a result of that, and as a precaution, York school has been evacuated.
