DEBATE NONNATIVE TREES-9/22/13-21:35-PMD

THE SANTA CRUZ CITY COUNCIL IS SET TO DEBATE CHANGES TO THE CITY’S HERITAGE TREE ORDINANCE.    AS IT STANDS THE HERITAGE TREE ORDINANCE PROHIBITS PROPERTY OWNERS FROM REMOVING LARGE OLD TREES OVER 44 INCHES IN DIAMETER, INCLUDING ACACIAS AND BLUE GUM EUCALYPTUS.  SOME RESIDENTS FEEL THAT BECAUSE THE TREES ARE CONSIDERED HIGHLY FLAMMABLE AND NOT NATIVE TO CALIFORNIA, THEY SHOULD NOTBE PROTECTED BY THE HERITAGE ORINANCE. THE MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY AT 7 P-M IN THE CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS.
