Teen Seatbelt Use Assessed 9/5/12 8a AF

A survey conducted by California State University Fresno, and released by the California Office of Traffic Safety on Tuesday reveals that Monterey County teens are less likely to wear their seat belts than most of the rest of the state.   Seat belt usage for Monterey teens was found to be at 87.2%; almost 9% lower than the state average of 96.1%.     The reports overall show an increase in seat belt usage among the youngest drivers, likely to due increased enforcement efforts and a number of awareness campaigns implemented in recent years.   The study also found that girls are slightly more likely than boys to wear seat belts, and that those driving truck have the lowest rate of seat belt use.
