Santa Clara County residents will soon have to begin dialing their area code, when a new one is introduced. Residents of the county have had the area code 408 since 1959, but when all numbers with that code have been used, the new 669 area code will be used. Numbers with the old code will still work, and will not have to be changed, but telephone users will now have to dial 1 and then the area code to make outgoing calls. Users will also have to reprogram phones to automatically dial the area code. The California Public Utilities commission says that numbers using the 408 area code will likely be exhausted by the end of the year.
