Representatives from 5 counties met at the Zayante Firehouse on Friday to discuss fire prevention and funding in the area. The two dozen members of the regional Fire Safe Council, including some from Santa Cruz County, gathered for the second time this year to share information about fire challenges they are facing. Fire Departments around the state have to make due with only $4.5 million dollars to fund 140 proposed fire safety projects, many of which will not be able to be implemented. With increased fire activity in the state this year, many local firefighters have been sent to help fight the largest blazes, also leaving home communities with fewer resources.
