The California Shock Trauma Air Rescue group number 5, or CALSTAR 5, is celebrating their 10th anniversary of saving lives in Monterey County. The team is based at the Salinas Municipal Airport, and services Monterey County, as well as parts of Santa Cruz and San Benito counties. CALSTAR 5 has taken and estimated 3 thousand flights over the last decade, with most of those to and from emergency or accident locations. The air ambulances can whisk injured victims to trauma centers in a fraction of the time ground travel might take, at a cruising speed of 150 miles per hour.
