president barack obama is expected to name the former fort ord as a national monument today. the designation is expected to include about 14-thousand-650 acres on fort ord’s eastern half, not including cal state monterey bay or the oceanfront lands along highway 1. the bureau of land management will supervise the land, and efforts to clean up unexploded shells and other ordnance are currently underway. fort ord will be the 2nd national monument president barack obama has named during his presidency.
