Surfer rescued 01/08/12 9:20p.m. TDH

A surfer was rescued on friday evening, when darkness and large waves combined to create a dangerous situation.   After the sunset, the 42-year-old man was unable to find the stairs at mitchell’s cove, in santa cruz, so he started yelling for help.  Santa cruz fire fighters and water rescue crews responded to the scene at west cliff drive and woodrow avenue.  Rescue swimmers took the surfer to a harbor patrol boat that waited outside the surf break, and the man was taken ashore uninjured.  A santa cruz police officer was injured when they slipped and fell during the rescue effort.
