Monterey county supervisors have given the go-ahead to apply for funding to build new jail facility.  Supervisors voted yesterday to authorize sheriff scott miller to move forward with the application process.  The county is seeking 80-million dollars from the state to fund the project, and if the grant is awarded, monterey county would contribute a sum of 10-percent of state funding:    8-million dollars.  Monterey county jail currently has 1,045 inmates occupying space designed for 829 people.   the grant is competitive with other counties; the winners of the funding will be announced by march 20th.
