Monterey county has the highest homicide rate in the state. That’s according to a report from the California department of justice. The report, titled “homicide in California 2010,” was released late friday, and reveals that monterey county ties with merced county for the highest rate, at 10 murders for every 100-thousand residents. It’s the 2nd year in a row that monterey county has topped the list. There were 44 homicides last year in the county, which is a decline from 2009’s 51 murders. Of last year’s 44, 20 of the homicides were recorded in salinas.
