Cal-fire cancels Air-Contract 07/07/11 6:20p.m. TDH

Cal-fire crews will have to wait longer for air-support this summer, after officials cancelled the agency’s contract with the company that owns the jets.   The DC-10 Air Tankers will still be available to fight fires, however it could take up to 24-hours to have them active.   Under the contract, tankers are kept ready, and can be deployed in less than an hour.    The tankers cost an average of 7-million dollars per year to operate.  the move is expected to save much of that, however total savings could change, if the tankers are needed.
