Vets Building Repairs 06/28/11 7:35p.m. TDH

The santa cruz county board of supervisors has agreed to fund the renovation work needed to reopen the veteran’s building on santa cruz’s front street.   county leaders shuttered the building in January of 2010, after engineers found structural problems with the building.   The repair work was tentatively approved Tuesday, and is expected to cost 3-point-4 million dollars.   The county plans to pay 3-hundred-thousand dollars a year to finance the project.   Veterans had been outspoken in their opposition to the building’s closure, and to what they called the county’s lack of urgency in fixing the problems.   Construction likely would begin next year, and is not expected to be completed until at least early 2013.
