grape quarantine expands (moth) 06/01/11 8p.m. TDH

The quarantine zone for grapes has grown to 9-counties in california.  That after the zones were expanded to include nevada county for the 1st time, since the discovery of an invasive moth.   the european grapevine moth is what is causing the trouble; it was originally found in napa county in 2009.   the quarantine, which requires grape crops to be inspected before being shipped, is now in effect over more than 2-thousand square miles.  1-moth was trapped in monterey county, and another in santa cruz county in 2010, however no more have been found, so there is no quarentine for those counties. The european grapevine moth is considered more damaging to agriculture than another moth that was detected in 2007, the light brown apple moth.   Efforts to eradicate that moth are still under way.
