members of the santa cruz county fair board voted yesterday to approve a request to hold a rodeo at the fair grounds this october. the 6 to 2 vote came almost a year after the board initially approved the request. it reversed course later, under threat of a lawsuit. opponents of the rodeo cited humane and environmental reasons, but a private consultant told the board that the rodeo was exempt from the environmental regulations being cited. the event is being organized by the stars of justice, (which is a youth program run by the santa cruz county sheriff’s office). proceeds from the event will go towards helping local youth programs.
