officials from santa cruz and monterey counties are pushing to unify the monterey bay area into one state senate district. the santa cruz county board of supervisors voted to send a letter to the citizen-led state redistricting commission, requesting that it restore santa cruz, san benito, and monterey counties to be the same district. the state senate district was split in 2001, when the state legislature redrew the districts. the deadline for local input on a rough draft of legislative boundaries is may 23rd.
