HWY-1 ROAD REOPENING EXPECTED FOR MAY 04-12-11 18:00 a.v.

A portion of Highway 1 in Big Sur, which was shut down last month due to a mudslide, will now remain closed longer than officials had expected. Highway 1 at Rocky Creek is now said to be closed until early May, instead of late April, as previously planned. Officials say geologic instability is causing construction work to be delayed. Caltrans says the early May reopening will only provide limited vehicle access with traffic signal control. Pedestrians, are still being escorted in both directions through a half-mile section from one end of the slide to the other twice daily at 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Bicycles are also allowed to be walked through the slide during these times.
