SALINAS APPROVES PRELIM. LAYOFFS 03-30-11 07:30 a.v.

A preliminary layoff was approved last night by Salinas City Council members in an effort to reduce a 7-million dollar budget deficit. The layoff would affect as many as 53 Salinas employees in the coming month, as well as eliminate 66 positions, 14 of which are vacant – as part of the city’s 90-day layoff process. The layoffs would impact about 22 positions in the city’s Police Department, which would affect the agency’s anti-gang unit, as well as the city’s paramedic program, and library system.
