Smart Meter Opt-out 5:45pm 03/25/11 TDH

Officials with pacific gas and electric submitted a proposal, which would allow customers a limited opt-out of the newly installed smart meters.   The plan was submitted to the california public utility commission yesterday, and would allow customers to have the radio device in the smart meter turned off.   That would allow the meter to operate without transmitting data wirelessly, which has concerned some residents.   According to a pg and e press release, customers who opt-out would pay an up-front fee, as well as recurring fees to cover the cost of sending meter readers to the property, and to pay for disruption to the smart meter grid.   The public utilities commission must approve the proposal, before it is offered to customers.
