SALINAS CONSIDERS OUTDOOR SWAP MEET 02-28-11 11:30 a.v.

A proposal that would allow a weekly swap meet to take place at the site of the Salinas Rodeo is slated to be discussed tomorrow. City council members are expected to consider the plan, which would allow the outdoor market to operate on Sundays and host up to 118 vendors. The city planning commission has already recommended modifying the proposal to require a 6-month trial period first, and reduce the number of vendors to 82. The modified plan is an effort to address concerns over the negative impact the flea market would have on area businesses.  The outdoor market applicant seeks to start the market by late March.
