Cold temperatures coupled with rain or snow is expected to cause hazardous driving conditions to local highways this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures today through Sunday are likely to reach the low 40s, with nighttime lows predicted at sub-freezing levels. Temperatures at night are said to drop into the high 20s bringing snowfall to Mount Toro, Mount Fremont, Laureles Grade and the Santa Cruz and Big Sur mountains. Drivers are warned of potentially hazardous conditions near summits on Laureles Grade, Highway 17 and other highways at higher elevations. Areas between 1,000 and 1,500 feet above sea level can expect about an inch of snow, and between 3 and 6 inches in areas above 1,500 feet. Officials with the U.S. forest service reminds people to plan for snow-covered and slippery roads, rock slides, trail washouts, flash floods and other hazards. They also suggest to check your local weather before traveling, take a map, have an emergency kit on hand in your car, make sure vehicles have adequate fuel, carry snow chains, and take special precautions to bring pets indoors and protect sensitive plants.
