MONTEREY CAB DRIVER STRIKE 02-01-11 17:00 a.v.

Cab drivers on the Monterey Peninsula are protesting a new licensing authority that is being run by Monterey-Salinas Transit. Multiple Cab Companies held a protest today at the Monterey Plaza Hotel saying the strike is a sign of solidarity against regulatory plans by the new Monterey County Regional Taxi Authority, who are expected to put cab drivers out of business through high inspection and permit costs, and coverage requirements. Officials with Monterey-Salinas Transit say the idea to regulate drivers came from the regional taxi authority, which said it needed the help from an outside agency.
