A transient was arrested in Santa Cruz over the weekend after attempting to sexually assault a woman. The just before 3:30 Sunday afternoon incident took place at a Front Street parking lot, when the suspect, identified as 54-year old Gary Smith, approached the victim from behind and threatened to rape her with a knife. The woman screamed and Smith fled from the area where he was followed to the river levee by witnesses. He was identified as the attacker and was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.
