A homeless census count got underway on the Central Coast yesterday. Volunteers in both Santa Cruz and Monterey County gathered to help get an accurate count to increase state funding for the homeless. The count is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development every 2 years, and federal funding hinges on the findings. Organizers say it’s crucial to get an accurate count of people living on the streets to ensure service providers receive the proper allocation of money to fight homelessness.
