A proposed regional seawater desalination project was unanimously approved yesterday by Monterey County Board of Supervisors. The 400-million dollar project is expected to continue supplying water to commercial and residential customers on the Monterey Peninsula, addressing a current water shortage issue, along with providing water to planned redevelopment of the former Fort Ord site. The project, which is estimated to create over 13-thousand acre feet of potable water, is in response to a cease-and-desist order to Cal Am Water Company to stop it’s illegal diversion of water from the Carmel River.
