Sal. Attempt Murder of Officer 12/12/10 8:45pm TDH

2-Salinas Police Officers were involved in a shootout on Saturday, after attempting to make a traffic stop.   At 4:15 p.m., officers pulled over a vehicle on the 1-thousand block of East Laurel Drive.  Police say the 32-year-old driver pulled out a handgun, and shot at the officers several times.  They returned fire, critically wounding the driver.  The 37-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries.  No officer-injuries were reported.  Both men in the car are suspected gang members; they were flown to Bay-area hospitals, where the passenger was treated and released, and the driver remained in critical condition over the weekend.   The passenger’s name has not been released, he was booked into Monterey County Jail for 2-counts of attempted murder, with gang enhancements.   Police are asking anyone who witnessed the officer-involved shooting, to contact the Salinas Police Department.
