n a 6-to-1 vote last night, Santa Cruz City Council members approved a proposed checklist for evaluating the unsafe conditions of rental properties. The 33-point checklist will guide inspections of the interior and exterior conditions of rental units. The list includes storage of trash, overgrown vegetation, lighting, weather protection for windows, basic utilities and smoke detectors.
In an effort to create funding for code violations, the council passed an ordinance in August that calls or registering all rental units and inspecting those that don’t qualify for self-certification.
